How come gas prices don’t differ much from company to company?

When I go to the store and want to buy a loaf of bread I have several different options on who to buy from and at what price. However, when I drive down the road and need to buy gas I never pay attention to where I stop in because, where I live, it’s never more than a cent or two difference. I was wondering why competitors like Exxon Mobil, Shell, BP, don’t seem to be competing very much for my business because the prices are always the same. Any insight here? I would think different companies would have different prices.

They know that if they all keep their prices the same, they will all make the same amount of money, and they make enough money to not care about gaining other customers. Another reason is because no matter what price they have, they will get business. They could raise their prices by a whole dollar and people would still pay because they need gas to get to work. Overall they would rather share the market and be on even ground with the other companies rather then decrease their profit in a price war.

I mean the national average gas prices throughout the US. I have look somewhere stating that the national average price was $1.89 during the 24th of November 2008. As for the current, it says that it’s $3.731 right now. So how much has gas prices risen in percent wise?

That’s a $1.841 increase!

So in percent, that’s about 102%.

I was told that the price of fuel is kept lower to remain competitive. So what am I missing here. Has oil competition decreased in the past 3 years? Now it is expected to raise about 60 cents by mid July. Please tell me why.

The price is speculated. The denial of the Canadian Keystone pipeline. The government saying NO to drilling off o both coasts and exempting millions of acres of federally held lands from any search. The fact that our government is basically stopping any drilling is the biggest part. The Iran situation exacerbates this.
