Are fuel prices going to hit a low this winter?

Posted by admin as Fuel Prices

Im looking to go on a Trans-Atlantic flight to Europe and the ticket prices are still about $1000 a pop. Do you think they’ll go down sometime in the next 2-3 months?

Prices usually are lower during the winter months to Europe as that’s the low season for travel to there. I think when you combine the lower demand and the winter travel season you’ll most likely find some pretty good deals and and sales for winter travel to Europe early next year. Airlines don’t all use the same strategy or timeframe when hedging on fuel prices, with oil prices down almost 200% you’re likely to find some airlines that have played the oil market better than others, hopefully that will result in lower ticket prices for some airlines. Wait awhile and I think it’s more than likely you will see lower fares for winter travel.

No..

While you and me are paying a lot less at the gas pump these days, remember that the airlines “hedge” their fuel. A hedge is a contract that they can’t get out of. So most airlines hedged their fuel when the prices were ranging from $70 – $120 a barrel or more! So now that the fuel has plummeted, don’t expect to see the air fares follow.

They are still paying a lot of money for fuel. Also the economy is slowing down all over the world, so the need to fly isn’t as strong as it was. With all of this, air fares will continue to stay the same in most markets so the airlines can try to make minimum profits.
