What is up with the way gas prices are posted?

Posted by admin as Gas Prices

It's always been the same way since I can remember: the 9/10 at the end of gas prices. Like 1.99 9/10. What is with the 9/10? Why don't they round it up to the nearest cent and stop playing games? I heard it was a ploy to make you feel like you're paying less. How stupid are we? They should just round it up to the nearest cent and leave it at that. What do you think?

I always heard that the pump does round it off to the next number as it pumps your gas. 1.50/99 becomes 1 51. Every ten gallons the pump gains one penny. Figure that up for ten or twelve pumps at the end of the day, for a week, for a year and it adds up to a pretty penny for the gas station. I have never received a gas pump receipt that reads $27.00/99
