When will gas prices go down with the new President ?
Posted by admin as Gas Prices
Will the gas prices go down when America gets a new President ? Im just wondering because the new gas prices are hitting me hard in California ( its almost 4.50 a gallon ) and Im getting worried. The idea that its going to change when we get a new President is my last hope. I leave in a area where puplic transportation is a real issue, there isnt enough buses and no subways. Can someone answer me ?
They'll go down the next time Monica Lewinsky does. Unlike last time, it won't be on a Clinton!

wow in wisconsin is $4.00 not sure what will happen . I think they should take a pole and ask the people what they think like drill in Alaska I understand they have lot of oil . I know we are trying to go green but Russa and their was a nother country that hit oil if they are doing it we should too

The President has little to due with gas prices. It's the Congress which creates policy, the President either approves or rejects.
In this case, the Democrats have always tried to keep prices high using the excuse, 'to encourage conservation'.
Read the CNN Money article below and they will tell you about Global Gas Prices.
If you've travelled outside the US, you'll know that we typically have the lowest prices of the Industrialized Nations, so while I don't like it I don't whine. I've been to the Netherlands, Japan, Thailand, etc. where prices per liter are very high.
Domestically, gas prices are high within the US primarily due to Environmentalism. You'll have to decide to what level you support the environment. We haven't had a new refinery built in the US since 1976. We don't allow drilling in Anwar and severely restrict it Offshore. A good percentage is locked up in the Strategic Oil Reserve. And politicians tax it very high like Alcohol and Tobacco.
What really pisses me off is why Puerto Rico, a US Territory, can get away with prices significantly lower than the mainland. Places like Venezuela are government owned and subsidized.

they just went up $11 on the news that one of them may actually become the president, you make up your own mind which one.

When the new president takes office in January of next year any decrease in fuel prices will be marginal at best. The President of the United States has great influence around the world but when it comes oil prices he can do didley squat. World demand is rising rapidly, supply is not. The refineries and distribution systems are at, or very near capacity. North America has built cities around the car. We are awash with sprawling suburbs: just look at Los Angeles, Houston, Calgary, Toronto, Chicago. We keep building out requiring people to drive in. We are now paying the price for short sighted city planning, gluttonous useage of fossil fuels and poor international relations. There are many places in this world – if given a choice – would happily turn off the tap that supplies North America and sell elsewhere. Don't vote this fall for a candidate who tells you that he can get you lower gas prices because he can't. You need to talk to the people at Exxon, Shell and Mobil, as well as the Saudis, Venezuelans and Iraqis. Good luck!

If he is honest and can get the corrupt congress to go along, it could be lowered in a few short months- Two things will bring it down immediately- ban the exportation of oil produced in the U.S. and make it illegal again to speculate in the oil market. People just don't understand that we are the fifth largest exporter of oil in the world- Why? Because the oil companies make more profit off the oil they export. Where does this exported oil come from? The Alaskan pipeline that delivers the oil from the Alaskan oil fields to the state of Washington to be loaded on oil liners for exporting.overseas.
This pipeline was built in the 70's by taxpayer money so that we would never again have to depend on imported oil, or so we were told- The oil companies used it to export the Alaskan oil for their own profit They could not have achieved this without the help of a corrupt administration , and a corrupt congress. That is why you never hear this mentioned- To be found guilty, they would have to investigate themselves- It just wont happen and they hope no one ever brings this up.

I don't know if any of the possible new presidents will even have the ability to fix this problem, but one thing I know is if the world economy self-destructs, prices will be forced to go down.

Uh…no. The new president will have absolutely no ability to lower gas prices. Even if they were to completely eliminate the gasoline tax, that would only cut off 18% from gas prices; so it would go from what we are seeing in California $4.50 to about $4.08 a gallon. Fuel prices will decrease when it's no longer needed. Even if an alternative is developed sooner rather than later, it won't really be any cheaper. There's going to be a profit in alternative fuel, a huge one in fact, so someone is going to make bank off of it…it's just won't be the American consumers and all those who are dependent on the American economy for stability.
Most of the public transportation in California sucks. That goes back to the 70's when Exxon and Firestone and other companies that relate to cars, bought up the trolleys in CA and took it apart. Forced everyone to ride a bus or a drive a car.

Gas prices are high primarily due to speculation and the fall of the dollar. It is not because of "environmentalism" or "supply and demand" or any of the foolish excuses the mainstream media spoon feeds you. If the new president can regulate the market again (he won't because he'll get paid not to) and restore the value of the dollar (not likely unless he is hiding 6 trillion dollars in his butt crack that he would like to donate to our deficit) then no, the new president will not affect the price of gasoline. sorry. the only thing that will effect it is a revolution and it is kinda sad in light of all other very good excuses this government has given us to revolt, that gas prices would be the one to tip the scale. but whatever, i will take what i can get i guess…

I don't think the gas prices will go down unless we start digging for oil ourselves rather than depending on foreign oil. Even with a new president, gas prices might remain the same or get even higher. I mean here you got the Alaskan Governor talking about wanting to drill in Alaska but is waiting for an answer. In Alaska there is oil that can last for years and years! What is it that our leaders are waiting for??! Stop depending on foreign oil and starting drilling for OUR OWN OIL for crying out loud!!

i think the president has much to do with gas prices….speculators and traders are driving up the prices of oil……since our current president is doing absolutely nothing to combat oil prices, gas continues to go up…im not saying the president has a direct effect ….however, if obama were elected, i believe gas prices will go back down…..bush has buddies in the oil industries, and they are getting rich off that fact….the answer is this…..we need to put more pressure on the car companies to build more fuel efficient cars and more hybrids, start investing to find alternative fuels (our economy is SO oil dependant)…we need some out side of the box thinking in order to control gas prices…i think thats what obama will bring to his presidency…

They won't. It's not really up to the president as much as Congress. They make or break the plans. And the way Diane Feinstein is talking, she's not too concerned about what's best for us.
Any alternative fuels will be expensive to develop, and some would require new vehicles. I don't know about you, but I can't afford a new car.
The public transportation here sucks, too. If local governments would invest some money into that, they could really help out everyone. But around here, they're too busy getting themselves out of paying taxes on their huge homes.
I agree with Hope, they should put Domestic drilling on the ballot this fall, and let US decide what we want to do. I know which way I'd be voting on that.

I doubt it.

Better get used to high oil prices – Nobody is making any more of the stuff and the world pumps 80 million barrels out of the ground every day. Soon the amount that can be pumped out of the ground daily will start to decline
It is time that local and state governments realized that their people will be much better off if more housing is built close to jobs.
Americans complain about dropping house prices and rising oil prices, apparently because they like driving long distances to work. – We would be better off with higher gas prices and lower house prices.

hi!
I just heard that by the end of summer here in Iowa gas prices are going to be at 5.50 a gallon, and right now were at 4.00….. So really it's going to get way worse before it gets any better.
I have also heard that when we get a new president that things will change but I fear that by then it is going to be too late.
Many people say were going to hit a depression, some say we are already there.
* what needs to be done is for everyone to quit driving but like you said, then what? what can you do? Do you have a bicycle?
Good luck hon

Of course I wont get best answer but this is the truth, even though nobody likes hearing it…..Gas is not expensive in USA at all. In fact, its very cheap. Its keeping up with inflation just like our food and other things, but for some reason people have started this trend where its hip to talk about gas prices it seems. Gas is only $1 more now, than it was in 2006. Thats pretty cheap. We are only paying $500 more this year on gas because your average american uses 10 gallons a week. If you worked at some low paying job like Tj Maxx or Walmart or something, I would expect that you would have gotten at least a .25 cent raise. A simple .25 cent raise a year on your job (or change jobs if you are not getting this) would cover the change in gas prices. So anybody who thinks they have less money because of gas, isnt taking this into consideration and should reevaluate their spending habits because its not because of gas prices why most americans are broke these days but they love to point the finger at that.
So lets do the math:
Gas is costing you $250 more this year than it did last year overall.
If you get a .25 cent raise on your job, you should be making $480 more this year than you did last year overall.
Its not that gas prices are bad, its just that people have made it a "cool" thing to talk about it. It makes everyday ordinary people feel smart like they are talking about stock prices
I live in california and the entire bay area has the cheapest public transportation around. I can go from San Jose all the way up to San Francisco 40 minutes away for under $4.00. I can go anywhere in San Jose for $1.75. And cashiers in grocery stores start out at $18.00/hr. We are the highest paying state around so gas shouldnt be a problem for you. If you are in an area that doesnt have public transportation, move. I just moved from California to Florida. Wasnt that hard and Im moving back again in 3 months. If I can move all the way to the other coast and back again, you can move to a nearby town.

Gas prices will go down when we stop using fuel. Eventually we will be forced to slow or stop our driving habits due to fuel costs and they will go down from there. As long as we keep our driving habits the same, the higher the gas prices will go.
Learn how to add water to your fuel double or even triple your fuel mileage. I did it in my 99 Corolla and get 61 MPG now! The link is below

It's all suply and demand. If the congress and president both agree to drill on the coast and in alaska, we will see a dramtic drop in gas prices.
Keep you're fingers crossed!

Gas prices aren't really based on who's President. It's up to the Oil Companies. Although, it would make all of us feel A LITTLE better if Bush would openly complain about the rising gas prices to the Oil Companies—-his input has little effect since the oil companies know that whatever price they have, American consumers will pay! The only thing left for us to do is do a national boycott of the gas prices or seek other solutions to our oil dependence (which unfortunately takes many years). I guess we'll just have to suffer through it and hopefully some politician in Washington D.C will jump aboard and help out with the rising gas prices epidemic!

This current (his name isn't even worth mentioning) president is very much to blame for this lousy economy. We're spending billions in Iraq and not here in the states where many problems exist. We can only hope that January 20, 2009 comes soon.

The president can't channge gas prices when the gas compenies don't belong to them. It's not up to him to lower them. They are so expenicive because: Well to star of, gas is not a renouable source. There's no mommy gas and no daddy gas to make baby gas! So the gas offer is dropping while the demand in gas is rising. More people are using not only vehicles to travel, but planes, boats and trains to which all demand gas. Another reason why gas is so expensive these days is because of the developping countries. For instance China is a developping country which means that the richer they get the more they want to be like us, drive cars, eat meat like steak… All these issue makes for a disaster. The best advice I could give you is to use public transportation, or invest in a car that doesn't use gas or is more efficient to avoid high gas prices.
