Cars using water to make Hydrogen for power
Posted by admin as Petrol Prices Australia
A bit of a follow up story from a couple of weeks ago about those Aussie blokes and their old Falcon and the use of hydrogen as a feedstock coupled with petrol that is claimed to produce savings.
Unfortunately, the first law of thermodynamics states quite clearly that the energy generated by recombining the hydrogen and oxygen through combustion can only ever be equal to the amount of energy it took to separate them.

The howls of pain are being echoed across the Tasman. It’s now reached a AU$1.72 a litre in Sydney (NZ$2.08 today’s exchange rate).
PM Kevin Rudd is facing strong public demand to do something to bring the prices down (What wave a magic fairy wand? or pray?).

NZ Inquiry into Oil Prices
Posted by admin as Petrol Prices Australia
16 June 2008
The Government has released details on how it will scrutinise the oil companies pricing.
It will mirror schemes that are already in place in some parts of Australia, there are doubts whether it will do anything to stop the constant rise in fuel prices.
—————
Um – o – this will achieve nothing – it’s a sop from the Government to the public. The Government knows about Peak Oil – but there is no way that they will acknowledge that – it’s in the too hard basket for them – and doesn’t win elections.

Oil Change – Part 1 of 2
Posted by admin as Petrol Prices Australia
24 June 2008
The price of oil and petrol has reached – well the stratosphere (Ha – you have seen nothing yet) – and you might be forgiven for thinking that the world is running out of the stuff (We are), but in fact there are huge deposits just waiting to be exploited across the Tasman.
Billions of barrels worth trapped inside rock – the Aussie’s are eyeing it up – dreaming of untold riches, and it’s not pie in the sky. The Canadians are already extracting oil from sand by the truckload.
It’s a brave new frontier, though of course there is a nasty catch.
***********************
Right then yes there is plenty in the ground – but the process to get it out of the ground and processed into anything useful is incredibly difficult and resource intensive.
The issue about running out of oil is not about how much is in the ground – it is about how much can be produced on a daily basis.
“Oil sands production is close to a million barrels a day, a little more than 1 per cent of global production. It’s going to take a huge amount of effort, capital and time, maybe ten years, to double Canadian oil sands production. It’s true that the Canadian resource is huge, but accessibility is long and slow. Our impact will be very slow.” – Syncrude’s Chairman of the Board – Marcel Coutu – July 2008
